A
Tribute to John Martin
|
John
Martin, who passed away on Wednesday, 17th December, aged 74,
was a much respected member of the Llanymynech Community. On his
retirement from a career as a teacher and latterly a manager with the Kennet and
Avon Canal in Reading he moved to Llanymynech in 1998. However, retirement was
not on his agenda and it was not long before canals again became a focus for
him. Through the Heritage Project and in particular an idea of building a
replica boat (packet boat Duchess Countess). Soon he had formed a Trust in the
boats name and from early beginnings he nurtured, cajoled and encouraged
numerous individuals and organizations to support the project. Through him the
Trust is now firmly established and operates through the Visitor Centre at
Llanymynech Wharf and the boat George Watson Buck on the Montgomery Canal. His
sudden loss will be keenly felt by all who came into contact with him. John is
survived by his wife, Paddy, and his two sons. Martin
